Morris.jpgMeet Our Homeowners

“While trying to get on my feet as a single mother, good friends suggested that I look into Huntington (WV) Area Habitat for Humanity. I went to an informational meeting, but still felt a little apprehensive about actually applying for the program.  It was only after I started looking for housing that I could afford that I realized that I needed a little help to be able to provide for my daughter the kind of home that she deserved. With the support of my friends and family, I finally decided to give Habitat a try. The decision was life-changing. I got to spend over a year learning new things and meeting numerous wonderful new people, and at the end of the process I got a home that exceeded all my expectations and that I can afford. This home means for my family financial freedom, safety, community and stability. I never thought that a place to live could mean so much. For the first time I get to put things away without having to consider having to pack it all back up again for another move. I have been overwhelmed by the generosity of my friends, my family, my church family, the Huntington (WV) Area Habitat for Humanity staff, the regular volunteers, and the complete strangers who have helped to make this dream a reality.  Words cannot express the depth of my gratitude. ”        ~ Jennifer Morris

Ferguson.jpgHubert "Oochie" Ferguson Jr. is the newest Huntington WV Area Habitat for Humanity homeowner. The former Fairfield West resident officially moved into the affiliate's 75th house in partnership with Cabell County Churches on Sunday, July 24th at 1750 Artisan Ave. Oochie, whose new home is the first Habitat home with a matching dog house for his puppy O.V., has been working as the custodian at the Habitat office for nearly two years and has been helping in sweat equity not only on his house but on others as well.

He said he was overwhelmed and thankful that he gained the courage to ask about, and then to apply for the program, which helps fill the vital need of affordable housing. "I am glad I found out how you do it, and since I got mine, I tell people to try," Ferguson said. "I am all right now because I tried. I will stay with Habitat for the rest of my life."
